The Trail Went Cold - Bonus Episode - Larry Race
Wednesday Mar 22, 2023
Wednesday Mar 22, 2023
For personal reasons, the latest episode of The Trail Went Cold has been delayed until March 29, 2023. In its place this week, please enjoy one of our exclusive bonus Patreon episodes from our archives, and we look forward to profiling a new case for you next week. Thanks for your patience.
May 11, 1982. Duluth, Minnesota. 33-year old married couple Larry and Debbie Race celebrate their 14th wedding anniversary by taking their boat out onto Lake Superior for an evening cruise. Hours later, Larry returns to shore and calls for help, claiming that a leak prompted them to evacuate the boat in a life raft before they became separated. Debbie’s body is soon found washed up on shore and her cause of death is determined to be hypothermia. However, since the life raft cannot be found and there are a number of discrepancies in Larry’s story, authorities suspect foul play and eventually charge him with Debbie’s murder. Larry is convicted of the crime and receives a life sentence, but even after he is paroled 22 years later, Larry continues to maintain that Debbie’s death was an accident. Was Larry Race wrongly convicted for the nonexistent murder of his wife, or was justice properly served? This month’s bonus Patreon episode explores one of the most heavily debated “Final Appeal” cases featured on “Unsolved Mysteries”.

The Trail Went Cold - Episode 320 - Verna Bjerky
Wednesday Mar 15, 2023
Wednesday Mar 15, 2023
May 2, 1981. Hope, British Columbia. After spending the night at a friend’s house, 16-year old Verna Bjerky leaves on a trip to visit her boyfriend, but even though she plans on hitchhiking to her destination, she never arrives. Five months later, some of Verna’s personal belongings are discovered in a remote area, but there is no trace of her body. During this time period, a serial killer named Clifford Olson is charged and convicted of the murders of eleven children which took place in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia. After he is sent to prison, Olson hints at possible involvement in Verna’s disappearance, but he is never conclusively linked to her case and Verna’s remains are never found. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we travel back to our podcast’s home country of Canada to explore the unsolved disappearance of Verna Bjerky, an Indigenous victim who has always been mistakenly classified as “white” in all of the official sources.
If you have any information about this case, please contact the Upper Fraser Valley detachment of the RCMP at (604) 792-4611 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

The Trail Went Cold - Episode 319 - Natasha Jennings
Wednesday Mar 08, 2023
Wednesday Mar 08, 2023
July 8, 1997. Carson City, Nevada. While visiting her father on a trip from California, 16-year old Natasha Jennings is found dead inside a bedroom at his apartment. An electric fan is lying over Natasha’s body, her hair is damp, and even though traces of cocaine and methamphetamine are inside Natasha’s nostrils, no drugs can be found in her system. There are a few theories involving foul play, including the possibility that Natasha was murdered because her father was a drug informant, but the medical examiner cannot figure out her exact cause of death. Was Natasha the victim of a homicide, a drug overdose, or perhaps some sort of freak medical condition that no one was able to detect? On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we will explore a number of different scenarios as we cover the truly perplexing unexplained death of Natasha Jennings.
If you have any information about this case, please contact the Carson City Sheriff’s Office at (775) 887-2500.

November 15, 1971. Galveston, Texas. 15-year old Debbie Ackerman and 15-year old Maria Johnson are seen climbing into a white van outside an ice cream shop, but they never return home. Days later, the girls’ bodies are found in a bayou and they are bound, nude from the waist down and have been shot to death. After several decades, a convicted murderer named Edward Harold Bell sends out letters in which he confesses to having killed Debbie and Maria. The Trail Went Cold - Episode 317 - The Eleven Who Went to Heaven (Part 1)
Wednesday Feb 22, 2023
Wednesday Feb 22, 2023
August 4, 1971. Galveston, Texas. After spending the day at the beach, 14-year old Rhonda Renee Johnson and 13-year old Sharon Shaw fail to return home and their skeletal remains are found in a bayou months later. A suspect named Michael Lloyd Self is eventually taken into custody and confesses to the murders, but even though he maintains his confession was coerced and that he is innocent, Self is still convicted of the crime. Decades later, another convicted murderer named Edward Harold Bell becomes an alternate suspect after he sends confession letters to the authorities. Bell claims he was responsible for the murders of eleven female victims which took place in Texas during the 1970s and refers to them as “The Eleven Who Went to Heaven”. His confessions also hint that two of these victims may have been Rhonda Renee Johnson and Sharon Shaw. To commemorate the seven-year anniversary of “The Trail Went Cold”, we are releasing a special two-part episode on “The Eleven Who Went to Heaven” and exploring a number of unsolved murders which may have been committed by the same perpetrator. This week, Part 1 will cover the murders of Rhonda Renee Johnson and Sharon Shaw and the controversial conviction of Michael Lloyd Self. Special thanks to listener Amy Harber for narrating the opening of this episode.
If you have information about any of these cases, please contact the tip line of the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office at 1-800-566-2209.

October 13, 1982. Morro Bay, California. The decomposed body of 43-year old Dian Harlin is discovered in a stand of trees next to a beach and she has been strangled to death with a leash belonging to one of her dogs. It turns out that Dian’s eccentric 47-year old husband, Hugh Harlin, had failed to report her missing for eleven days and since the couple was known for having a turbulent relationship, Hugh becomes a potential suspect in his wife’s murder. Four years later, Hugh inexplicably vanishes without a trace after his abandoned pick-up truck is discovered by the side of the highway. Investigators are unable to determine if Hugh’s disappearance is connected to Dian’s murder, but both cases are never solved.
May 3, 1992. Polk County, Florida. After attending a rodeo, 31-year old Larry Costine and his 26-year old girlfriend, Melissa Jo Sermons, return to Larry’s mobile home. Larry’s nude body is eventually discovered inside the trailer and since he was shot four times and Jo has gone missing, investigators initially suspect that Jo killed Larry and went on the run. However, two decades later, law enforcement announces that they now believe Jo was a victim and was murdered by the same person who shot Larry. While Jo’s ex-boyfriend is considered to be the prime suspect, there is not enough evidence to charge him with the crime and Jo is never found.
On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover two unsolved mysteries in which one half of a couple was murdered while the other half went missing.
If you have information on the Hugh & Dian Harlin case, please contact the Morro Bay Police Department at (805) 772-6225. If you have information on the Larry Costine & Melissa Jo Sermons case, please contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at (863) 533-0344.

The Trail Went Cold - Episode 314 - Lindsay Buziak
Wednesday Feb 01, 2023
Wednesday Feb 01, 2023
February 2, 2008. Saanich, British Columbia. 24-year old real estate agent Lindsay Buziak arrives for an appointment to show an expensive suburban house to an unidentified man and woman. When Lindsay’s boyfriend goes inside the residence to check on her, he discovers that she has been stabbed over 40 times and the mysterious couple have fled the scene. Over the years, there are a number of unconfirmed theories surrounding Lindsay’s murder. Even though Lindsay’s boyfriend and his family are cleared as suspects by the police, speculation still abounds that they were involved in the murder. It is also theorized that Lindsay’s death was connected to a massive drug bust and she may have been the victim of a professional hit. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore one of Canada’s most infamous unsolved cold cases, which has yet to reach a resolution after 15 years. Special thanks to listener Melissa Holman for narrating the opening of this episode.
If you have any information about this case, please contact the Saanich Police Department at (250) 475-4356.

The Trail Went Cold - Episode 313 - The St. Louis Jane Doe

February 28, 1983. St. Louis, Missouri. The body of an African-American girl is found in the basement of an abandoned apartment building. She is believed to be between eight-to-eleven years old and has her hands tied behind her back and it turns out she was sexually assaulted and strangled to death before she was beheaded. Since the victim’s head is never recovered and she cannot be identified, she becomes known as the “St. Louis Jane Doe”. Over the years, investigators explore a number of different leads, but they are unable to determine the girl’s identity or figure out who was responsible for killing her. On this week’s episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore one of the most horrific and tragic stories you’ll ever find about the murder of an unidentified decedent, who has also been known by such as names as “Little Jane Doe” and “Precious Hope”.
If you have information about this case, please contact the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department at (314) 231-1212.
